Thank you, the internets...

This is amazing. In the course of only 14 posts, an innocent thread on how to join together two pieces of carpet descends into anger and recrimination...

Are the OP or just an observer? (ETA: Just realized this is a very old thread, so I'm guessing not.)

you claim to be a member of various web forums yet...

....patently you are unaware of who is a recognised expert on this forum

...to find out is quite simple - you search previous posts made by the member, this very quickly gives you an idea of who to listen to and who to take with a pinch of salt.

... wow. WTF. Or maybe nasty members should be told to give it a rest, rather than expecting newbies to research who is going to be nasty??

This reminds me of the time years and years ago, I asked an innocent question on a Firefly forum, and some guy was really snarky with me. No one else was snarky, but someone was all "oh, you know, that's just how he is." I never posted there again after that. It may not have been a reflection on the forum, and this may not be either, but when members condone that stuff... I think all forums do have those kinds of members, but in my experience, the better ones at least call them out on it, rather than blame or dismiss the newbies.

I thought I might have exaggerated the brilliant awfulness of this thread, but nope: having slept on it, it's still amazing. Possibly it is channelling all the bile of that entire large forum.

And yeah, I hate that "just how he is," business - often a sign of one of the Five Geek Social Fallacies in action, whereby people know somebody's behaviour is unacceptable, but they've decided it's unacceptable ever to exclude anybody, no matter what...

"specially if someone breaks there leg outside in a park or something"

Well, at that rate of going we're all sitting ducks! What's to stop someone breaking their leg in a park, dragging themself to my place and claiming my carpets did it?!
